Season 2008/2009 - Under 8s to play Football 4s

ESSDA is proud to announce all u8 football organised by the Association will be 4 aside at the start of the new season August 2008. 4v4 is the recommended game for Children of 7 years of age and younger and this is outlined in the Scottish FA National Plan and the South East Regional plan for youth football.

4v4 is not a new concept. The Dutch introduced the format into youth football in the mid 1980s when they realised that the decline in street football was having a harmful effect on development. This is something that has never really been addressed in Scotland. 4v4 is the game at its most simple, whilst still preserving the main characteristics that the game should have both depth & width. There are a number of different games that can be played that utilize different skills.

This is not just about the 4v4 game, but learning about structure and organisation that puts the children firmly first.

Several independent studies have been conducted and all state that 4v4 is the best way to introduce children to the game of football.

All teams needing support for this transition will be fully supported by the Scottish FA Regional Development staff through in-service sessions, session planners and DVD's, all of their contacts are listed on www.footballcentral.org/southeast

Football 4s at Hearts Academy

Due  to  falling  numbers  the  Football 4s  programme  at  the  Hearts  Academy  has  now  finished.  It  was  agreed  at  the  very  start  that  we  needed    a  certain  amount  of  teams  to  participate  to  make  this  a  sustainable  event,  but  this  has  not  continued.

ESSDA  would  like  to  thank  HMFC   &  Coerver  for  their  support  during  the  programme.

Football 4s will be aimed at children moving into Soccer Sevens - this year this will primarily be for children born 2000 and 2001.

Further details of the Football 4s format can be found on the Football Central website.
